The Harms of Excessive Antibiotic Use From November 18 to 24, the week of proper antibiotic (antimicrobial) use is observed. According to WHO data, about 50% of antibiotics are improperly prescribed, leading to a continuous rise in antibiotic resistance cases. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives due to diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This number is expected to reach nearly ten million by 2050. Incorrect use of antibiotics destroys the natural flora of the gut, which negatively affects the digestive system. As a result, the immune system is weakened, leading to the development of other diseases. Especially in children, improper use of antibiotics can cause many diseases such as digestive disorders, diabetes, liver, and kidney failure. As the Public Health Committee, to raise awareness among medical students and encourage their participation in this fight, we organized a training titled “The Harms of Excessive Antibiotic Use.” Infectious disease specialist Dr. Əminə İsmixanova provided detailed information on the basic principles of antibacterial drugs and their effects on the human body. The harms of excessive antibiotic use and related issues were presented through various images and videos. In the second part of the event, students were divided into groups and prepared projects under the topics “The Role of Parents in Antibiotic Use” and “The Role of Students in Awareness” which they then presented. The team with the best project was awarded a certificate at the end of the event. “Remember, if the bullet is used correctly, it can save a life; if not, it can cause death.” Sincerely, Assistant of the Public Health Committee Aytac Yusifli
